On the heals of the success of Groupon, Walmart launched its own crowd-sharing site called CrowdSaver which allows users to collectively buy deals, savings each individual user money. They partnered with Facebook by making it available on the retailer’s Facebook page. If enough users “like” a deal Walmart sets the discount price and makes it available. They hold a tight reign on which products become available to ultimately were the ones to benefit most from the program, which was a big role in the failure of the service. It gave Walmart the opportunity to unload surplus inventory and discounted prices instead of allowing customers to dictate what kind of products they wanted to see.
